Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site - Plants
Plants communities within the park are determined by their habitat. In the upland meadows near the Visitor Center, you may see a mix of native and non-native grasses interspersed with wildflowers. Other wildflowers are shade-adapted and thrive under the tall canopy of forest trees. Wetlands can be found near streams as well as near seeps and springs at the summit of the mountain. Trees vary with elevation in the park, with ash found on the lower mountain slopes and black cherry and beech found at higher elevations. Oaks can be found in drier areas of forests while hemlocks prefer moist woods. Plants you may see may also change with the season. From spring wildflowers like trilliums and may apples to fall blooming goldenrods and asters, there is always a sparkle of color in the fields and forests of the park.
