Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve
Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve was established to protect one of the last
unspoiled coastal wetlands on the Atlantic Coast, and to preserve historic and prehistoric
sites within the area. The estuarine ecosystem includes salt marsh, coastal dunes, and
hardwood hammocks.
Tonto National Monument
Well-preserved cliff dwellings were occupied by the Salado culture The people farmed in the Salt River Valley and supplemented their diet by hunting and gathering native wildlife and plants. The Salado were fine craftsmen, producing some of the most exquisite polychrome pottery and intricately woven textiles to be found in the Southwest. Many of these objects are on display in the Visitor Center museum.
Touro Synagogue National Historic Site
Touro Synagogue, dedicated in 1762, is the oldest synagogue in the United States and the only one that survives from the colonial era. The synagogue was designed by noted colonial architect Peter Harrison and is considered one of the finest examples of 18th century architecture in America.
