Reptiles are cold blooded animals, which must move from a warm environment to a cooler environment in order to maintain the correct body temperature. They are covered with scales and posses claws on all appendages. The exception to this rule are snakes which have no legs. The young look like miniature versions of the adult and can survive on their own with no parental care. Amistad National Recreation Area contains many varied species of reptiles. Lizards, snakes, and tortoises can be seen daily. Several are listed on the Endangered and Threatened list. The lizards and tortoises are harmless, but some of the snakes in the area are poisonous so care must be taken when participating in activities.
