Q - When we arrive, where should we start our visit of Big Thicket? A - The Visitor Center . It is open year round from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m except Christmas and New Year"s Day. The Visitor Center is seven miles north of Kountze, Texas, at the corner of U.S. Highway 69 and FM 420. Address: 6102 FM 420, Kountze, TX 77625. Phone: (409)951-6725, fax: (409)951-6718. Q - Where can I find lodging and restaurants near Big Thicket National Preserve? A - Several communities are found near the many Preserve units and have lodging and eating establishments. To the north, Woodville and Jasper, Texas, and centrally, Silsbee and Kountze, Texas, offer lodging and eating facilitates. To the south, with the largest selection, is Beaumont, Texas. Q - Are there commercial campgrounds near Big Thicket? A - Yes, there are several commercial campgrounds in this region of Southeast Texas. Any of the popular annual campground directories should have a listing of these campgrounds Q - How long will it take me to "really see" the Big Thicket? A - We would recommend that folks spend a minimum of three days. There are eight trails to hike and a lot of opportunities to go canoeing or kayaking. If you enjoy mountain biking, we offer a trail. If you enjoy birding and your visit brings you our way in the spring, you can enjoy birding around the Preserve for several days. The spring bring the annual wildflower bloom. Q - Just where is Big Thicket National Preserve located? A - The Preserve is found in seven of the nine Southeast Texas counties. The major city near the Preserve is Beaumont, Texas. Beaumont is located on I-10 about 90 miles east of Houston, Texas. Q - What is the weather like in the Preserve and Southeast Texas? A - Please view our weather page . Q - How far is the Preserve from Beaumont, Texas? A - The Preserve is non-contiguous made up of several land and water units. The northern portions of the Preserve, Big Sandy Creek Unit and Beech Creek Unit, are about 50 miles from Beaumont (northwest and northeast). Yet, a unit of the Preserve is located on the northern boundary of the City of Beaumont. Q - How can I get to the Preserve using commercial transportation? A - Beaumont, Texas is served by Continental Airlines®. You can fly directly into the Southeast Texas Regional Airport located south of Beaumont. AMTRAK and commercial bus lines service the Beaumont area. Rental cars are available in Beaumont too. Q - Are there insects and other "biting things"? A - With the exception of winter, there are active insect populations including mosquitoes most of the year. Fire ants are found here too. All known venomous snake species of the United States are found in this region. Simple preparatory and cautionary measures should prevent any problems. Q - Are there any fees I will have to pay to see the Preserve? A - No. We have no entry or other types of fees at this time. Home
