The ocean is a uniform environment, influenced by the Florida Current. There is an abundant food supply and a constant salinity of 36 ppt. From a technical standpoint, the open ocean consists of areas with depths greater than 120 feet. Since Biscayne National Park's greatest depth is 60 feet, there is no open ocean within park boundaries.
