Meadowood Special Recreation Area


Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area was established on October 18, 2001 and is located on Mason Neck peninsula in Fairfax County, Virginia. Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area offers 13 miles of hiking, horseback riding and mountain bike trails including a universally accessible trail to Hidden Pond, two fishing ponds, 800 acres of forest and meadows, environmental education programs, geocaching, picnicking and bird watching. Managed deer hunts also occur at this site. Meadowood offers environmental education programs for homeschoolers, public and private schools, local 4-H groups and community youth agencies. Programs consist of bird identification, fishing, habitat hikes, tree identification, Urban Leave No Trace, tracking, invasive weed removal, clean-up days, and many other outdoor environmental education activities. The 9,000 acre Mason Neck peninsula is located along the Potomac River about 18 miles south of Washington, D.C. Two-thirds of the peninsula is protected and managed by Federal, State and Local Agencies. The nearby attractions on Mason Neck include Gunston Hall - historic home of George Mason IV, author of the Virginia Bill of Rights, Elizabeth Hartwell - Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge (NWR) managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Mason Neck State Park managed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, and Pohick Bay Regional Park managed by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. This area offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the rich history, environmental and recreational opportunities on Mason Neck. This area has rare undeveloped and protected lands compared to other areas in Fairfax County and Northern Virginia. The BLM Lower Potomac Field Station is located at 10406 Gunston Road. There are 4 additional access points to Meadowood Recreation Area. These are located at 10702 Harley Road, 10324 & 10705 Belmont Boulevard and 10207 Old Colchester Road.


From I-95, take exit 163 Lorton. Turn left onto Lorton Road at end of exit ramp. Turn right onto Lorton Market Street. Proceed to traffic light at Route 1. Go straight through light(road name changes to Gunston Road)and go about 1 mile.
