
The Lookout is accessible by all vehicles with fairly good ground clearance. The last mile of road is rough, and trailers are not recommended. This lookout sits 50 feet off the ground. A stairway leads to a catwalk that surrounds the lookout room. The lookout has four chairs, a table, one twin size beds, two cots, propane cooking stove, propane heater, and a propane refrigerator. There are no modern bathroom facilities or electricity. Visitors should plan to bring the lock combination, directions to the lookout, bedding/sleeping bags, air mattresses or cots, drinking water, flashlights and or lanterns, food and beverages, warm clothing and toiletries, binoculars, camera, insect repellant, garbage bags, and a sharp knife. A pit toilet is located just below the lookout. Bald Mountain Lookout offers a bird's eye view from its perch 5,334 feet above sea level. Bald Mountain Lookout, located on the northern edge of the Palouse Ranger District, offers incredible panoramic views, to the south the Palouse and on the north the St. Maries Ranger District. A photo album in the lookout identifies the prominent landmarks that surround you. The lookout is one room and sits at 50 feet off the ground. It's wide enough to pull up a chair while you enjoy the view You may see, deer, elk, bear, moose, and the majestic eagle. Just to the southwest of the lookout is the trail to Strychnine Ridge Trail 319. This is a three mile trail that also junctions with trail 228, one half mile below the lookout. Trail 228 leads down to Giant White Pine Campground, and is eight miles long. These trails are open to hikers, mountain bikers, motorcyclists and horses.

A pit toilet is located just below the lookout. Most lookouts have occasional visits from Forest Service employees or members of the public. These people may be looking at the views, from the peak or from the cabin walkway, or using the outhouse. You have rented the lookout, and have the use of the cabin. There is a 2 night minimum and 4 night maximum stay. Please "Pack it in, Pack it out" as there is no garbage service. On road 377 you may encounter delays, truck traffic, and dust associated with a logging operation. Cabin can only be reserved up to 180 days in advance.
Bald Mountain Lookout (ID) 1700 HIGHWAY 6 Potlatch ID 83544 From Coeur d'Alene, Idaho- Drive south 70 miles on U.S. Highway 95 to State Highway 6. Turn left on State Highway 6, White Pine Scenic Byway, and travel through Potlatch and continue on for 22 miles. Turn right on Forest Road 377, Palouse Divide Road. This is a single lane, dirt surface road that is rarely graded and slippery when wet. Follow road 377 for approximately eight miles to the junction with road 377A. Turn on road 377A and climb for one mile to Bald Mountain Lookout. This last mile of road is rough and has many water bars so travel is slow. From Lewiston, Idaho- Follow U.S. Highway 95 north for approximately 45 miles to State Highway 6. Turn right on State Highway 6, White Pine Scenic Byway, travel through Potlatch and continue on for 22 miles. Turn right on Forest Road 377, the Palouse Divide Road. This is a single lane, dirt surface road that is rarely graded and slippery when wet. Follow road 377 for approximately eight miles to the junction with road 377A. Turn on road 377A and climb for one mile to Bald Mountain Lookout. This last mile of road is rough and has many water bars so travel is slow. The Palouse District office is located in Potlatch before entering town from the west and is located off Highway 6 on the left hand side of the road. There is a sign located at the base of the driveway along Highway 6.
