Return of the Wild: The Future of Our National Lands
Ted Kerasote (Editor)
From the Publisher: andlt;p>As individuals and as a nation we believe that if we recycle and buy fuel-efficient cars we have done our part to protect the environment. Yet an important element is missing. If we don’t conserve the still-undeveloped places of the earth, human life will be disconnected from its fellow animals and torn from its roots. Humans will still exist, but as Ted Kerasote explains in his insightful introduction, "we’ll be like potted trees in the foyers of great skyscrapers - alone and not part of a wider forest.andlt;p>Our efforts to recycle and conserve energy must be augmented with advocacy for the protection of wild spaces, and Return of the Wild is an important underpinning for that endeavor: a guide through the issues of the day, a history, a forum for debate, a source of information. Sponsored by the Pew Wilderness Center, the book brings together leading thinkers and writers to examine why nature in its most untrammeled state is vitally important to all of us; what currently threatens wild country; and what can be done not merely to conserve more of it, but also to return it to our lives and consciousness.andlt;p>Contributors including Vine Deloria, Jr., Chris Madson, Mike Matz, Richard Nelson, Thomas M. Power, Michael Soulandeacute;, Jack Turner, and Florence Williams consider a wide range of topics relating to wildlands, and explore the varied economic, spiritual, and ecological justifications for preserving wilderness areas. The book also features a completely new four-color mapping of the remaining roadless areas on federal lands, as well as the National Wilderness Preservation System, now measuring 106 million acres, in which much of this roadless land could one day be included.andlt;p>This first annual edition is both an inspiring and thoughtful introduction to wilderness subjects for the general public and an invaluable reference for legislators, the media, and conservation organizations. It is an essential new contribution to wilderness preservation efforts.
From The Critics: BooknewsThe first of what is projected as an annual publication advocating the protection of wild spaces contains a new mapping of all the roadless areas in the US larger than 1,000 acres that remain on federal lands and are not part of the National Wilderness Preservation system. Like- minded contributors from various walks of life offer 13 essays; a gallery presents stupendous glossy color photographs. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Metro Ice: A Century of Hockey in Greater New York Starring Rangers, Islanders, Devils, ETC.
Stan Fischler
From the Publisher: One hundred years of hockey in New York City. Seventy-Five years of big-league hockey at Madison Square Garden. Two decades of hockey on Long Island and in New Jersey. These and other signature moments in Met Area hockey history are celebrated in a new, fully illustrated book, Metro Ice: A Century of Hockey in Greater New York." Authored by the dean of New York hockey journalists, Stan Fischler, Metro Ice is the most comprehensive look at the Tri-State scene ever produced. The scenes-both in color and black and white-are brought to life with never-before-seen photos and New York hockey artifacts from the vast archives of co-author Tom Sarro. Re-live the birth of the Rangers, the downfall of the Americans, the Islanders’ march to four consecutive Stanley Cups, the emergence of the Devils and the end of the Wayne Gretzky era at Madison Square Garden. Metro Ice chronicles not only the National Hockey League in the Metro area, but also the colorful lives of the New York Rovers, Long Island Ducks and the World Hockey Association’s New York Raiders-Golden Blades. Fischler details the night Rangers manager Lester Patrick-the "Silver Fox"-went between the pipes as the backup goaltender during a playoff game in the 1928 finals, helping the Blueshirts win their first Stanley Cup. Learn about how Detroit legend gordie Howe was originally a Ranger, or about how Johnny Bruno the press agent for the 1926 Rangers. He changed the names of French-Canadian goalie Lorne Chabot and Finnish forward Oliver Reinikka to Lorne Chabotsky and Ollie Rocco, respectively in an attempt to attract the Jewish and Italian communities. Metro Ice explores the current local rivalries and how they were born in chapters like, "Rangers-Devils, Islanders-Devils, NHL-Devils; The Rivalries Get Serious." In addition, Fischler chronicles the rabid fans that have peppered the history of the city’s teams. The only book to evaluate this subject, Metro Ice devotes a full chapter to the NHL teams and the fans who love them. Fischler recounts such examples as the fan who stuck Toronto enforcer Wild Bill Ezinicki with a hat pin as he bent over for a face-off and author Alan Goldfarb’s own telling of the impromptu kick hockey games played in Madison Square Garden’s balcony during intermissions. The final chapter acts as a narrative of area media from the Americans’ first press agent through the current lineup of broadcasters and beat reporters. Fischler details the last 75 years of media with oral histories and columns taken from area newspapers in every era. A large amount of information comes from the time when beat reporters traveled, and often times lived, with the teams on all road trips. With that shift came a change in the actual role of a reporter. "The job is tougher because the teams no longer look at you as a friend or a neutral person who covers the team for a newspaper," said Devils reporter Rich Chere. "They view you as the enemy." This modification, along with the growth of television, transformed the Met Area print media for good. As Fischler states, "Hockey writers had to compete with televised games that were completed by eleven p.m., long before their papers hit the stands. As a result, the print writers turned more to featurey-type stories, exclusives and more hard-hitting journalism than ever before." Fischler fills this chapter with rare information like the New York Times’ coverage of the Rangers’ first Stanley Cup victory and "the best poem ever written about loving the game of hockey, `I’ll Take Hockey Anytime.’" This-one-of-a-kind book, from rich visuals to colorful anecdotes, has something for everyone. The edition is chronological and color coded for each team, making Metro Ice an essential work for any fan of the game.
From The Critics: Stu Hackel - Hockey NewsWith rare, incredible photos matching a secret history which reaches back to the 1880s, this is a must for anyone who ever skated in west New York, New Jersey or watched the Long Island Ducks play in Commack....is both a unique hockey book and a unique book about New York. Gerald Eskenazi - New York TimesWith this magnum opus-indeed, the first of its kind to celebrate the institution of hockey hereabouts-Fischler turns his all-seeing eye, his stereophonic ear, and his good-natured sense of humor to this fastest sport. Rich Chere - Newark Star -LedgerNo one knows more about the history of hockey in the metropolitan area than Stan Fischler. His stories always bring to life the game I treasure. Even if you didn’t live it, Metro Ice makes you feel like you had a seat behind the net for the past century.

Outdoor Recreation: United States National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands
Charles I. Zinser
From the Publisher: This book presents an overview of the vast and diverse federal recreation system, its historical evolution, methods of management and development, and the different roles played by the National Park Service, the Forest Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. It explores concepts in land-use planning, examines relevant federal legislation, and presents federal concepts for preserving amenity resources. Rather than make an exhaustive presentation of current facilities and recreational opportunities, author Charles Zinser uses a case study approach to illustrate and analyze programs and development principles found in each of the major agencies. More than 300 tables, maps, and illustrations supplement the text. An entire chapter is devoted to the recreational resources of smaller federal agencies, including the Army Corps of Engineers, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, all of which permit various forms of water-related recreation on reservoirs under their control. Many people are surprised to learn that, in terms of recreational use, the Army Corps of Engineers is the number-two federal agency. Packed with helpful, practical, and authoritative information, Outdoor Recreation is a one-stop source on the availability, development, and management of recreational resources within the federal system. It is a first-rate reference for anyone involved in forestry, geography, wildland or watershed management, land-use planning and development, or creating recreational facilities. It is also an ideal textbook for courses in geography and recreational use of public lands.
From The Critics: BooknewsA comprehensive account of the outdoor recreation resources of the US: where they are, their history, how they are used, and how they might be managed. It also offers information on the acquisition, development, and protection of natural resources. It includes numerous maps and tables; an examination of the federal legislation that created current problems and facilities; and case studies that illustrate the practical impact of federal policies and concepts.
