Ancient mountains shaped by time, a gently curving valley carved by the Delaware River and shaped by glaciers, forests, fields, lakes and ponds, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has much to offer the interested visitor. To truly experience the character of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, one must take time to explore the park. While the Gap itself can be viewed from several overlooks along route 611 in Pennsylvania and from the back porch of the Kittatinny Point Visitor Center in New Jersey, it is best explored from a vantage-point on a boat in the middle of the river. Many liveries in the area will provide canoes, kayaks or rafts to the adventurous visitor and will explain important safety information. The staff at the park encourages all visitors recreating on or in the river to wear a coastguard-approved life vest. To appreciate the diverse plant and animal life living in the forests, fields and wetlands in the park, one should consider hiking one of the parks many trails. Information about park trails can be found on the park's website or by visiting one of the park's visitor centers.
