Since the late 1930s the National Park Service has been constructing a modern parkway that closely follows the course of the original Natchez, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Indian trail to the northeast, an unhurried route from Natchez to Nashville.
The entire parkway is a two-lane, undivided linear drive between Nashville, TN, on the north and Natchez, MS, on the south. The parkway also crosses the northwest corner of Alabama.
Start the Mississippi portion of the Parkway in southeastern Mississippi at the city of Natchez. Travel north along the Natchez Trace Parkway road, passing through Lorman and Port Gibson. Continue in a northeast direction until you reach Clinton.
The route continues on a northeast path, passing by the Ross Barnett Reservoir to the east and the junctions of SR 43 and US 51 to the west. The byway continues north and passes through Kosclusko.
The Parkway will pass through several more towns on the path north, such as French Camp, Mathiston and Mantee. The byway briefly passes through the Tombigbee National Forest and past the Chicksaw Agency. Continue northwest until passing Bear Creek Mound where the Mississippi part of the Natchez Trace Parkway ends at the border with Alabama.
