Kids will enjoy seeing people dressed in period costume on our special event weekends and holiday weekends during the summer. They will like to hear the roar of artillery, learn how Civil War soldiers lived during Civil War weekend, or watch and perhaps join in American Indian dancing during American Indian Heritage weekend.
On the 4th of July weekend we always have games for kids to participate in. Hoop and roll contests, tug of wars, and sack races entertain children and adults alike.
Occasionally, we will bring soldiers with horses in for special events. And don't forget our spring education programs which are specially geared toward visiting school groups.
Children can participate in Fort Scott's Junior Ranger Program by obtaining a free booklet at the park visitor center. Upon completion, the child will receive a junior ranger badge and become a "Defender of our Heritage".
We have also developed a summer day camp known as the Fort Scott Trailblazer Program. Children ages 10-14 from the community participate in a series of activities spread over 5 days that expose them to the mission of the National Park Service. Call (620) 223-0310 for more information.
