Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site - For Kids

Junior Ranger Program

A new and exciting Junior Ranger program is now offered to young visitors ages 8-12 at the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site. This interactive experience introduces young people to Olmsted and his accomplishments as America's premier landscape architect. Participants are also encouraged to better appreciate outdoor spaces while learning more about the role of the Olmsted firm in creating and preserving parks and green space across the United States.

Children begin their "training" by joining a Park Ranger on a tour of the historic Olmsted office. While on tour, they will answer questions and complete activities in their Junior Ranger Activity Booklets. Afterwards, participants use tools found in the Landscape Explorer Pack to travel around the Olmsted home landscape. Activities include measuring an elm tree to estimate its age, writing a haiku poem, sketching a favorite view, and recording animals seen and heard on the grounds. After successfully completing the program, children are "sworn in" as Junior Rangers and receive badges and certificates.

Junior Ranger programs in our national parks provide educational tools and fun experiences for children and their families when visiting America's natural, cultural, and historic treasures.
