It's funny how hiker's and backpacker's attitudes towards outerwear are completely different from car campers and traveling tourists. That's because when you're a day or more from the nearest trailhead, you need reliable and versatile gear like this Rayzar Jacket from Cloudveil. It's made with a special Schoeller Textured Dryskin Extreme that not only wicks moisture away from your body, it also improves most internal wicking dry times by 75%, so you stay more comfortable even in damp conditions or those spaces where you can't elude high humidity--like inside your backcountry tent. The fit is tapered and close so it works well beneath a climbing harness or backpack, but you can still get away with wearing a couple of lightweight layers without feeling overstuffed. You'll also find that the zippered handwarmer pockets are elevated and long so you can grab gear without digging beneath your pack or harness straps. Another nice touch is the zippered sleeve pocket with wire port for your two-way radio headset--or iPod if you can't stand being away from your tunes for more than a day on the trail. This jacket is light, bombproof, attractive. Cloudveil is on a par with Arc'teryx for quality and design.
