Although the shoe still feels nimble on paved stretches this does add three ounces to the overall weight. Still, the synthetic leather does enhance stability and provide greater protection in cold weather and on rough trails. The Vasque Mercury Trail Running Shoe's ride is characterized as soft and cushioned yet is sturdy enough that it does not collapse underneath the arch. To accomplish this Vasque uses a molded EVA midsole with an integrated plate of nylon textile. This softens the blow of repeated heel strike, while at the same time gives the shoe enough rigidity to provide a stable platform when dodging a low-hanging branch or dancing across a boulder strewn streambed.
