The National Park Service maintains a free walk-in campground in Bartlett Cove. The
campground features a bear-proof food cache, fire-pit with firewood, and warming shelter
located in a very scenic setting along the shore, 1/4 mile south of the Bartlett Cove dock.
Stays are limited to 14 days.

Berners Bay Cabin Campground

It does not have mattresses or cooking utensils. Oil stove uses #1 stove oil (#1 diesel) and kerosene with them to be supplied by user. For a list of stove oil suppliers for the Juneau area call (907)586-8800. Fuel consumption is approx. 1 gallon per day with stove on low setting. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear and food. The person holding the reservation must be 18. No commercial use allowed. From 5/1 to 9/30 the maximum length of reservation is 7 days. From 10/1 to 4/30 the maximum length of reservation is 10 days. There are NO discounts for Golden Age and Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. Description: Federal Recreation Lands Senior/Access and Golden Age/Access Passport holders discount only applies to the campsite use fee. It does not apply to extra utility charges for that campsite. The campsite use fee is the same as the basic campsite fee. Newly reconstructed in 2OO0 69 camping sites (49 available on a first-come, first-served basis; All others must be reserved on NRRS). Peak Season May 15 to September 15 The campground is situated on the shore of Mendenhall Lake at about 100' elevation with views of the Mendenhall Glacier 1.5 miles distant to the north and flanked by the Mendenhall River to the east, On either side of the campground the mountains rise from 4000' to 7000' above the Mendenhall Glacier. From its source 12 miles up the Juneau lcefield, the glacier flows between the steep jagged peaks of the Coast Mountain Range to its terminus at Mendenhall Lake. Downstream from Mendenhall Lake sits the Mendenhall Campground in relatively flat and open topography of recessional moraines, small lakes and ponds. The vegetation ranges from primary successional forbs and lichens, secondary plant communities consisting of black cottonwood, Sitka alder and willow to mature spruce hemlock forests wIth an under-story of blueberry bushes and mosses, Golden Age and Federal Recreational Lands Senior or Access cards accepted. Nearby amenities include: boardwalk trails with bird-viewing platforms in the campground, Skater's cabin picnic area, hiking/biking trails to the glacier, canoeing and kayaking on Mendenhall Lake and fishing in glacial ponds. Of the 69 sites, 9 are full service RV sites with electricity, water and sewer hook-ups, 9 are partial service RV sites with electricity, and water hook-ups. There are 7 sites located in a separate walk-in backpacker area, 43 of the 69 sites accommodate camping units larger than 30 feet. All sites are furnished with accessible picnic tables, fire grills and tent pads. Water faucets and accessible vault toilets are furnished through out the campground. There are two accessible flush toilet and shower facilities. 56 sites are fully accessible. A central dump-station is located on site. The campground host and garbage dumpster are located near the campground fee station, Firewood is rarely provided, campers are encouraged to bring their own. Campsites are available both by reservation and as a first-come first- served basis. Reservation sites are identified on the site post. The reserving party's name and reservation dates shall be posted on site post prior to reservation date. When reservation sites are not reserved they are available on a first-come first-served basis. Golden Age Golden Access and Federal Recreational Lands Senior or Access cards accepted for first -come first-served sites at campground. Individual campsite maximum reservation period is 14 days per calendar year. Reservations must be made through the National Recreation Reservation System for all sites that may be reserved ahead of rime. The Juneau Ranger District has a 14 day maximum camping limit per calendar year which applies to both the Mendenhall and Auke Village Campgrounds.

The surrounding terrain varies from open muskegs to densely forested steep slopes. There are cutthroat trout below the falls and in the lower lake. Dolly Varden fishing is year round, while steelhead and coho fishing are seasonal. Photo opportunities abound. A-frame cabin is equipped with sleeping loft, wooden bunks, table, benches, woodstove for heat, and an outhouse. It has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food. A skiff with oars is provided for cabin users only; bring personal flotation devices. Description: Admiralty Cove Cabin is in Admiralty Cove, a small cove within Young Bay. The Cabin is located along a fishing stream, about 1/4 mile from the saltwater beach. Popular activities include wildlife viewing (brown bear, deer, and waterfowl may be seen in the nearby area), berry picking, and beachcombing. This cabin is in a primitive setting with no electricity, plumbing, or telephone. It is a one-room cabin with 4 bunks and will sleep up to 6 people. A 4.5-mile trail leads to Young Lake; a 0.25-mile trail leads to Admiralty Cove. The cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table and benches, oilstove for heat, and an outhouse.
