Available Facilities

SOUTH RIM:

The South Rim is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All visitor services: camping, lodging, and restaurants are available year round. Reservations are strongly recommended during the busy summer season. Some facilities are closed during the winter.

A free shuttle bus system operates in the Grand Canyon Village area. Make your visit easier by parking your car and using the shuttle to get around. Make sure you stop at the park's visitor center at Canyon View Information Plaza, which are reached only by shuttle.

NORTH RIM: Mid-May to Mid-October

Lodging and camping along with all other visitor services and facilities are only open from mid-May to mid-October. Reservations are strongly recommended. Additional facilities are available in the surrounding Kaibab National Forest, the Kaibab Lodge area, and Jacob Lake.

During winter months, the road to the North Rim, Highway 67, is often closed due to snow. After the close of visitor facilities in mid-October, there may be a period when the North Rim is open for day use only. (before the snow comes) During this time there are no services or overnight facilities available inside the park. The road from Jacob Lake to the North Rim (Highway 67) is subject to closure due to snow with little or no notice during this interval and then remains closed until mid-May.

MUSEUMS

Kolb Studio, South Rim

Once the home and business of the Kolb brothers, pioneering photographers at Grand Canyon, this building (1905) has been restored. Visit the free art exhibits in the auditorium, and shop in the bookstore. Kolb Studio is located in the Village Historic District at the Bright Angel trailhead. Open daily 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Tusayan Museum, South Rim

A visit to Tusayan Ruin and Museum provides a look into the lives of a thriving community as illustrated by its pottery, seashell bracelets, corncobs, and arrowheads. See 2,000-4,000 year old original split-twig figurines. Art from today's tribes provides a glimpse into their rich cultures. The museum, open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., is located 3 miles (5 km) west of Desert View. Free admission.

A visit to Tusayan Museum will provide a glimpse of Pueblo Indian life at Grand Canyon some 800 years ago, admission is free. A self-guiding trail leads through the adjacent 800-year-old Tusayan Ruin. Ranger-led ruin tours are offered daily. Educational materials about the park and region are sold in the non-profit bookstore.

Located 5 miles north of the park's south entrance. (South Rim)

Exhibits

Contains temporary exhibits about the fossil record at Grand Canyon. A panorama of the canyon is visible through the building's large windows.

Available Facilities

Educational materials about the park and region are sold in the Grand Canyon Association bookstore. Public restrooms located next to the parking lot. Additional open hours after 5pm vary seasonally.

VISITOR CENTERS

Canyon View Information Plaza, South Rim

Location

Canyon View Information Plaza is located at Mather Point. Access is via shuttle bus to Canyon View Information Plaza. Ride the Village Route bus. Additional open hours after 5pm vary seasonally.

Closures

Outdoor exhibits may be viewed anytime (however the lights at Canyon View Information Plaza are turned off at 9pm).

Exhibits

Several outdoor exhibits provide a variety of information about Grand Canyon National Park and what to do once at the park.

Available Facilities

Restrooms, pay phones, bookstore, and shuttle bus stops. The canyon rim is only a short stroll away.

Desert View Information Center, South Rim

Desert View is located 25 miles/ 41 km east of Grand Canyon Village. The Desert View Information Center and Bookstore, located at Desert View Point near the park's east entrance, offers a Passport Stamp cancellation station, an excellent selection of publications, and memorabilia. Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

North Rim Visitor Center

Located adjacent to the parking lot on Bright Angel Peninsula, by the Grand Canyon Lodge. The North Rim Visitor Center has park and regional information, maps, brochures, exhibits, and a bookstore. Open mid-May to mid-October, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Interpretive programs are offered during the season. Public restrooms are located in back of the building.
