During the summer months, we offer the Junior Ranger Dynamic Earth Program (ages 9-14). By attending this program you will discover how the forces of nature create, uplift, and sculpt rock to form the Grand Canyon. Participants earn a Dynamic Earth certificate and Junior Ranger badge. After riding our free park bus along the Hermits Rest Route, you will meet the ranger by the bell at historic Hermits Rest. This two hour program contains a 1-mile rim hike along the unpaved trail between Hermits Rest and Pima Point. Upon completion of the program, students receive a Dynamic Earth certificate entitling them to the program's custom patch. Completion of this program also satisfies the requirement of attending one ranger program for the Junior Ranger Activity Booklet and earning a Grand Canyon Junior Ranger Badge. This moderately strenuous rim hike is not recommended for people with heart/breathing problems, walking difficulty, or fear of heights. Sturdy shoes, water, sunscreen, and a hat are strongly recommended. The Junior Ranger Dynamic Earth Program is only offered during the summer months, usually between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Consult the official park newspaper, The Guide, for current starting times.
