National Parks of America
Michael Brett

From the Publisher:
For tourists, family campers, and serious lovers of the outdoors, here is a big, beautiful, color-illustrated book that describes more than 50 national parks, sites, and seashores that stretch from Cape Hatteras on the Atlantic coast to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, Yosemite in California, Haleakala in Hawaii, and Glacier Bay in Alaska. More than 400 breathtaking photographs capture the beauty and atmosphere of each site, and 54 color maps show each park’s location and major features. Visitor information panels give important details on access points, accommodations, and recreational activities such as hiking, rafting, birdwatching, and fishing. Here is a wonderful volume that will inspire plans for trips and evoke marvelous memories of past experiences in America’s great outdoors.

From The Critics:
Library JournalBooks on national parks are always in demand because of the need to get away from it all. But popular parks such as the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and the Great Smokies too often resemble NASCAR racetracks rather than places people visit to escape the crowds and the noise. These two eye-pleasing guides will help readers find some beautiful spots in the United States and Canada that have not yet absorbed the population of Poughkeepsie. Canada is an especially good place to find peace and quiet, since most of its national and provincial parks are quite distant from civilization. In addition to being visually alluring very few of us have ever come back from a vacation with the types of photos that appear in these books both books are replete with useful travel information (when to go, what to see, how to get there). Recommended for armchair and seasoned park travelers alike; public libraries should consider purchasing these as supplements to Freeman Tilden’s definitive The National Parks (o.p.) and the glossy guides from the "National Geographic Park Profiles" series. Haleakala National Park
David Petersen

Annotation:
Describes a variety of animal homes, shelters constructed by man for domesticated and zoo animals, and explains that some animals do not build homes.

From The Critics:
Children’s LiteratureThis short but informative chapter book continues the series titled, "True Books," about our national parks. It is a perfect introduction for beginning researchers in the primary and intermediate grades and also a useful resource for the home. Some of the chapters include, "The Legend of Haleakala" and "How the Islands Began," which includes information about volcanoes and tectonic plates. Dramatic photographs display an eruption and a lava flow. The book includes a glossary, index, map and resources where readers can find further information about the topic, including on-line resources. Beautiful color photographs grace almost every page and vividly reveal the truly remarkable beauty in this national park. The chapter about First People includes information about the first islanders, called Polynesians, the first European explorer, James Cook and the plants and animals he brought with him on his explorations, including the mongoose. A fascinating look at our fiftieth state. 2001, Children’s Press, $22.00. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Sue Reichard
