The park is home to approximately 14 amphibian, 18 reptile, 36 mammal, 30 spider, 43 fish, 174 bird, and 276 insect species. Among these are the southern flying squirrel ( Glaucomys volans ), the northern copperhead ( Agkistrodon contortrix ), and the bald eagle ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus ). Currently, the park is conducting surveys to obtain an up-to-date inventory of animal species found in the park.

In the summer of 2001, the Peregrine Falcon Restoration Program started at the park. Since that time 12 peregrine falcon ( Falco peregrinus ) chicks have been released on Maryland Heights. Some were outfitted with satellite transmitters to track their movements.
