Bird lovers enjoy their visits to Herbert Hoover NHS, since they have the opportunity to see many species here. Some species are common to grasslands, while others prefer hedgerows. Still other birds have adopted the parkland with tall sparse tree cover and grass beneath as a substitute for the savanna habitat that they have lost. Lying on the Mississippi flyway, Herbert Hoover NHS provides a good perch from which bird lovers watch migratory species, sometimes observing species rarely seen in other parts of Iowa. The National Historic Site celebrates International Migratory Bird Day on the second Saturday of May. Visitors have enjoyed seeing the array of migrants and residents at that time.
