Although the National Park Service is working hard with the rock climbing community, we all need to take into consideration this is still a National Park. We need to always keep in mind this is an environment we must protect. Rangers are already having to deal with soil erosion, vegetation damage, trash, natural and cultural resource protection. If you are planning to visit Joshua Tree for your rock climbing adventure, please remember these issues and help protect the park and its environment as best you can! A good rule of thumb: Leave No Trace.

A few rules to abide by when rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park

1) It is prohibited to initiate or terminate a climb in an occupied campsite without prior permission of the occupant of that site.
2) The use of any substance, such as glue, epoxy, or cement, to reinforce hand or footholds is prohibited.
3) “Chipping” or enhancing hand or footholds is prohibited as is removing vegetation or “gardening.”
4) Climbing within 50 feet of any rock-art site is prohibited.
