Lava Beds National Monument - For Kids

Lava Beds is a wonderful place for children. They like nothing more than putting on a hard hat (available for roughly $4 at the Visitor Center), grabbing a flashlight (also available for loan), and heading off to explore a cave. Will they get scared? How far does it go? Or, how about walking in the footsteps of Modoc warriors through the lava fortress at Captain Jacks Stronghold, or imagining you are a soldier spending a cold winter in a tent at Gillems Camp? Nature and history await young explorers at Lava Beds.

Junior Ranger Program

If you have one or more days to spend at Lava Beds with children between the ages of 5 and 13, then the Junior Ranger program is for you! Kids can earn an official Lava Beds Junior Ranger badge to add to their collection by completing activities about park resources, and by attending ranger-guided programs or exploring the Visitor Center. Please ask for your Adventure Books, pencils, and crayons at the Visitor Center. Enjoy your visit!
