Lava Beds National Monument - Mountains


Lava Beds National Monument lies on the northern flank of the Medicine Lake shield volcano, the largest volcano in the western U.S., cover over 700 square miles, which is located near the southern extent of the Cascade Range, and northwest of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Mount Shasta (14.165 ft.), a large strato volcano, is 40 miles southwest (as the crow flies) of the monument. On a clear day one can observe the rim of crater lake (80 miles) to the north and the Warner Mts. (75 miles) to the east, near the Nevada border.
