Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site This one-acre site commemorates a battle which had one objective-- make impossible the threat of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest to interfere with General William T. Sherman's railroad supply line from Nashville to Chattanooga during the Atlanta campaign. The battle was considered a major tactical victory for the Confederacy, but did not diminish the effectiveness of Sherman's campaign as supplies continued to flow Gulf Islands National Seashore The Seashore stretches 160 miles from Cat Island in Mississippi to the eastern tip of Santa Rosa Island in Florida. More than 80 percent of Gulf Islands National Seashore is under water, but the barrier islands are the most outstanding features to those who visit. Natchez National Historical Park Natchez National Historical Park celebrates the rich cultural history of Natchez, Mississippi and interprets the pivotal role the city played in the settlement of the old southwest, the Cotton Kingdom and the Antebellum South. Natchez Trace Parkway The 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway commemorates an ancient trail that connected southern portions of the Mississippi River to salt licks in today’s central Tennessee. Tupelo National Battlefield The battle of Tupelo was the result of one of the advances by Major General Andrew J. Smith. Although the Federals retreated to Memphis after the battle, it was a Federal victory: Vicksburg National Cemetery It is the final resting place of 17,000 Union Soldiers, a number unmatched by any other national cemetery. Approximately 1,300 veterans of conflicts subsequent to the Civil War are interred at Vicksburg. Vicksburg National Military Park Vicksburg National Military Park was established by Congress to commemorate one of the most decisive battles of the American Civil War, the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg. |
