Mojave National Preserve - ActivitiesWith enough moisture, spring wildflowers carpet the desert with vivid colors from March through May. The wildflower display varies greatly from year to year depending on rainfall. 4-Wheel Drive Routes: Hundreds of miles of dirt roads await the well-prepared explorer. Pick up a detailed map at the Baker or Needles Desert Information Center, or on weekends at the Hole-in-the-Wall Ranger Station. Teutonia Peak Hike near I-15: Explore the dense Joshua tree forest on the way to a peak on Cima Dome. Marked trail is 4 miles roundtrip. Marked trailhead is 10.5 miles south of I-15 on Cima Road. Kelso Dunes Hike near I-40: Early morning and late afternoon hikers will appreciate both the rosy glow of the dunes and the cooler temperatures. 3 miles roundtrip of slogging through sand, this hike may take several hours. Marked trailhead is 14 miles north of I-40 on Kelbaker Road, then three miles west on the well-graded dirt access road. |
