Monocacy National Battlefield - Amphibians

Many different types of amphibians can be found while visiting Monocacy National Battlefield. Be sure to hike the riverside trails and look and listen for species such as the American Toad and the Northern Spring Peeper. The park is also home to a variety of salamanders such as the Spotted Salamander, the Marbled Salamander, the Long-tailed Salamander, and the Red Backed Salamander.

Since aquatic habitat encompasses much of Monocacy’s landmass, amphibians play a huge role in the stability and diversity of the park"s ecosystem. The Monocacy River and a tributary to this river known as Bush Creek, run directly through the battlefield and provide excellent habitat for our many amphibian species.

Currently, a reptile and amphibian survey is being conducted to document species presence, their abundance, and a measure of population health. It should be completed by the end of 2004 and the species list made available from this page.
