Monocacy National Battlefield - AnimalsWith the area surrounding Monocacy National Battlefield being rapidly consumed by urban sprawl, this park serves as a sanctuary for many species of wildlife. Monocacy encompasses 1,647 acres of land which include a variety of habitat types. These different types of habitat include meadows, fencerow corridors/edge habitat, deep woods habitat, agricultural fields, and riparian forests types, as well as streams and rivers. These diverse habitats provide homes for species such as native songbirds, white-tailed deer, red backed salamanders, northern copperheads, eastern box turtles, and bald eagles. There are a variety of studies currently underway at the park. These studies include monitoring deer health and population density, examining the effects of deer on native vegetation, stream and aquatic health and viability, as well as reptile and amphibian and bat studies. The results of these studies will aid in managing a healthy wildlife community in the park today and in the future. |
