Fernow Cabin Campground

Description: This rustic 3-bedroom log cabin is located in a beautiful ponderosa pine setting on the Mogollon Rim. Nestled in a scenic draw, the site is isolated, private and provides a great opportunity for getting back to nature. Expect cool nights spring through fall and some warm days in summer. The cabin is suitable for groups of up to 8 people. Dogs are allowed but must be kept outside. No more than 4 horses/mules permitted on the cabin grounds. Please clean up after all your animals. Off road vehicle users, recognize your role in protecting the wild lands surrounding Fernow Cabin. Please tread lightly and stay on designated roads complying with regulations applicable to your vehicle. The cabin has running water from approximately late May to early October. There is an indoor shower that is usable with in the above dates. Inside the kitchen it has a stove/oven and a small refrigerator. There is also a small dining area, hot water heater, propane lights, woodstove with firewood furnished and a covered porch. It is furnished with a double bed and dresser in one down stairs bedroom, a full size futon and dresser in the other, and four single beds in the upstairs loft. The kitchen supplies include pots, pans, utensils, dishes, stove top coffee pot and a can opener. The toilet is a short walking distance from the cabin. On the ground there is an outdoor BBQ grill/fire ring combination, two picnic tables, and a small corral. The cabin and toilet are not accessible for wheelchairs. Fernow Cabin is located approximately 22 miles south of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon is 102 miles from the cabin. All roads are suitable for high clearance vehicles. Roads worsen during snow or heavy rains. Fernow Cabin sits at 6,700 ft in elevation. Supplies you need to bring: Sheets and blankets (or sleeping bags) for two double beds and four single beds, pillows, flashlights, towels, garbage bags, warm clothes, dish washing liquid, dish towels, matches and newspaper for the wood stove. Bring an ax for splitting firewood. Lawn chairs are nice for the summer months. Cell phone coverage at the cabin is poor. Pack out all food and trash when checking out. A cabin manual is located inside of the cabin to answer cabin specific questions during your stay as well as provide you with area recreational information. Cabin has no electricity or phone and all appliances and lighting are run on propane. Instructions for use of all propane adapted items are located in the cabin manual inside the cabin.

Groom Creek Schoolhouse Campground

Description: Unique historical schoolhouse and adjacent picnic area is an excellent spot for meetings, luncheons, and weddings. Facilities accommodate both indoor and outdoor activities amongst the pines. The schoolhouse building can accomodate up to 50 folks with folding tables and folding metal chairs onsite. The entire site can be rented for one price. There is a large picnic area, outdoor amphitheatre and a schoolhouse for when the weather drives the function indoors. Oakdale, as it was first named in July 1901 soon changed to Groom Creek in August 1901 with the establishment of a Post Office. Robert Groom was a prospector and miner when he came to the Bradshaw Mountains in 1862. Colonel Groom had trained for his surveyor career in the U.S. Army in 1824 and used his talents to survey the first Prescott town site. The first school of record at Groom Creek was established about 1896. The miners children were taught by Mrs. Alice B. Elliot. From the sketchy records it appears that the school moved about the settlement numerous time and usually closed in winter due to severe snows. The 10-15 students that attended school came only after important chores like fuel wood cutting, water collection, stock feeding, and such were attended to. This County School #39 was built about 1902. It has 2 rooms and was heated by wood, until modernized with gas in 1935. In 1967 the school district Quit Claim Deeded the school building to the Prescott National Forest and since that time has been used for administrative uses and training. All smoking must be done within enclosed vehicles, buildings, or developed fee recreation sites where the area is cleared of all flammable material. Also available nearby is the Upper Wolf Creek Campground. Visitors to Groom Creek can spend the evening at the group campground. Or the entire event can move to the campground after dark.

Towers Mountain Cabin Campground

Description: This cabin has a lock box for the key. The combination is given out on the confirmation letter. Please call 928-443-8285 to confirm the combination, especially if you make the reservation close to your arriv date and might not get the letter in time This Forest Service log cabin is on top of Towers Mountain in the Bradshaw Mountains near Crown King, AZ, in the Prescott National Forest. This area is rich in gold mining history. The cabin sits next to a historical fire observation tower still in use today., The cabin has running water, a flush toilet, shower and electricity., The kitchen has all the basic amenities including a sink, propane stove/oven, refrigerator, table and four chairs., You will need to supply your own dishes, utensils and cookware., Outside, there is a grill and picnic table. The cabin has propane heat., The maximum capacity for the cabin is four people., There are two beds in the cabin, one queen bed, and one double futon., No linens or bedding provided. This cabin is about five miles from Horsethief Cabin and the Castle Creek Wilderness area. Hiking opportunities are numerous on several trails in the area. Off-highway vehicles have several roads and trails available for travel. The historic lookout tower and Crown King Saloon offer other areas of interest. All smoking must be done within enclosed vehicles, buildings, or developed fee recreation sites where the area is cleared of all flammable material.
