Getting There Plane Commercial airlines serve San Francisco and Oakland International airports, both about an hour"s drive from the monument.
Car Muir Woods is located 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Take Highway 101 to the Highway 1/ Muir Woods Exit. Follow the signs to Muir Woods. Roads to the park are steep and winding. Vehicles over 35" long are prohibited. Parking space is very limited and fills quickly on most days. There are no RV parking facilities.
Bus Vehicles longer than 35 feet are not permitted on the Muir Woods Road and some portions of Highway 1 in southern Marin County.
Public Transportation Public Transportation New for the 2005 summer season -- public transportation (Muir Woods Shuttle – Golden Gate Transit – Route 66) will serve the park on weekends and holidays only between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The service will be offered for FREE and operate every 30 minutes through most of the day. The service will not operate Monday-Friday. Timed transfer connections between the Route 66 shuttle with Golden Gate Transit Routes 70/80 from San Francisco and Routes 10/22 from Sausalito are built into the schedule. Regular transit fares apply for Routes 70/80 and 10/22. The pilot shuttle is funded by Marin County and operated via a contract with Golden Gate Transit. Service will be FREE to all passengers. Visitors will be able to board the shuttle at the transit center located on Donahue Street adjacent to the Marin City Gateway Shopping Center or just after the principal exit to Muir Woods at the Manzanita Park and Ride near the junction of Hwy. 101 and Hwy. 1. The shuttle will operate non-stop to Muir Woods via Hwy. 1 and Muir Beach and up Frank Valley Road to the redwoods. Visitors will board the return trip from Muir Woods in the main lot near the bus parking area about 50 yards from the visitor center. Getting Around There are 6 miles of trails in Muir Woods. There is a 1/2 hour loop, a 1 hour loop, and a 1 1/2 hour loop as well as trails that extend into surrounding parks. All of these walks afford views of thousands of old-growth coast redwoods, the tallest living things in the world. Picnicking, pets, bicycles, smoking, and camping are not permitted within the park.
