National Capital Parks-East - BirdsA total of 261 bird species (and two hybrids) has been recorded from National Capital Parks-East (NACE). Of the 261 species recorded, eight species, mute swan, ring-necked pheasant, rock dove, European starling, house finch, house sparrow, and domestic goose and duck, are not native to NACE. A total of 27 bird species are considered to be extirpated from the parks or are rare accidental or transitory vagrants. Extirpated species include ruffed grouse and greater prairie chicken. The passenger pigeon, which once occurred here, is now extinct.
