National Capital Parks-East - Flood PlainsThe flood plains within National Capital Parks-East (NACE) are found primarily along the shores of the Potomac River in Piscataway Park and the Anacostia River in Kenilworth Park. They also sometimes reach inland along the banks of creeks draining into these rivers. Forests dominated by trees such as Red Maple (Acer rubrum), Boxelder (Acer negundo), Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua), Red Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), and Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra) generally cover these floodplains. The only example of a Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) / Pin Oak (Quercus palustris) wet depressional floodplain forest community in NACE is found in Piscataway Park just south of Mockley Point. |
