National Capital Parks-East - InsectsA total of 195 species of Lepidoptera (75 butterflies and 120 moths), 47 species of Odonata (31 dragonflies and 16 damselflies), 156 species of Coleoptera (beetles, including fireflies, weevils, etc.), 59 species of diptera (flys, mosquitoes, etc.), 39 species of Hymenoptera (ants, bees, wasps, etc.), 18 species of Orthoptera (crickets, grasshoppers, katydids, etc.), 15 species of Hemiptera (true bugs), 5 species of Homoptera (planthoppers, cicadas, etc.), 5 species of Neuroptera (owlflies, fishflies, lacewings, mantidflies, antlions, etc.), 2 species of Blattodea (cockroaches), 1 Dermaperan (the European Earwig {Forficula auricularis}), and 1 Isopteran (the termite, Reticulitermes flavipes) have been documented from National Capital Parks-East (NACE). Four of these species, the Gray Petaltail Dragonfly, Carolina Satyr Butterfly, Dion Skipper and Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly, are listed by the State of Maryland as being rare, threatened or endangered within the state.
