National Capital Parks-East - Trees and ShrubsNational Capital Parks-East (NACE) has documented 123 species of trees within its parks. Of the 123 known species, 28.6 percent are species not originally native to NACE. Of the 88 native species, the oaks (Quercus sp.) are the most common with 15 species documented. Three species of state rare trees are known from NACE, the Pumpkin Ash (Fraxinus profunda), Shumard Oak (Quercus shumardii), and the Butternut (Juglans cinerea). A total of 95 species of shrubs have been recorded from NACE parks. These include 31 species of non-native shrubs. Dominant native species include Spice-bush (Lindera benzoin) and Pawpaw (Asimina triloba). |
