Details
No campgrounds or lodging are available in the park, but nearby communities offer full service accommodations. Overnight backpacking is available in the Petrified Forest Wilderness. A free permit is required and can be obtained at the Painted Desert Visitor Center or Rainbow Forest Museum. Permits must be procured at least 1 hour before closing.

Lewis Canyon Campground
Mileage:61 mi
Description: Hiking, horseshoes, baseball field, and access to the White Mountain Trail System for non-motorized trail use only (bikes, horses, hikers). Non- potable water is available. This campground was surrounded by the Rodeo-Chediski Fire in the summer of 2002. The inside loop of the campground has large, green ponderosa pine trees and was not impacted by the fire. The area around the campground was severely burned during the fire. The burned area presents various safety hazards, including stump holes, and falling limbs and trees. The remaining green trees within the campground have been sprayed with a pesticide to help protect them from bark beetles. Benny Creek Group Area Campground

Description: The campground is situated on a bench above Benny Creek, within walking distance of Bunch Reservoir (Greer Lakes). Sites are fairly open, under a canopy of ponderosa pine. Be prepared for rain, often heavy, through July and August. Expect cool to cold nighttime temperatures. Walk-in season dates are weather permitting only. Located in a heavily forested pine and aspen area, at an elevation of 8500 feet. Facilities provided include paved roads, restrooms with flush toilets and showers.
