Boston Harbor Islands Sp Campground

Description: The Boston Harbor Islands are less than an hour's ferry ride from downtown Boston. This national park area has campsites on four of 30 harbor islands and accessible to the public via passenger ferry service or private boat. Camping is available on Lovells, Peddocks, Grape and Bumpkin Islands and reservations are required. The four island campgrounds have no water for flush toilets (composting only), showers or drinking but offer a great primitive experience within sight of the Boston skyline. Interpretive tours and public safety is facilitated by at least two island rangers 24 hours a day. The Park`s waterways are patrolled by local, state and federal enforcement/emergency response authorities. PLEASE NOTE: Peddocks Island is closed to the public until further notice. Only Grape, Bumpkin and Lovells offer camping in 2009. One night minimum stays are accepted.

The campground offers 481 sites with water and electric, and newly renovated bathhouses. On the beach, three new comfort stations, over-the-dune boardwalks, and a new playground and pavilion area make this a popular ocean destination. The Reservation also has two boat ramps that are located on the Merrimack River at the campground`s southern edge.

Wompatuck State Park Campground

Description: Located just a 35-minute drive from downtown Boston, Wompatuck State Park offers 260 wooded campsites (138 with electricity), 12 miles of paved bicycle trails, and many miles of wooded bridle paths, hiking trails and Mountain Bike trails. Fishing and boating are popular activities in the Aaron Reservoir. One of the most notable features of the Park is Mt. Blue Spring which is a popular source of fresh drinking water. Visitors can help themselves for free. Boston Harbor Islands and Plymouth Rock attractions nearby.

Massasoit State Park Campground

Description: IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 2009 SEASON: Massasoit State Park campground will be closed for the 2009 season, as the electric system servicing the campground is in need of repair. As an alternative, DCR encourages campers in southeastern Massachusetts to enjoy nearby Myles Standish State Forest. Myles Standish is close to the historic town of Plymouth, and just a few miles from scenic Cape Cod. It offers 400 campsites, tucked in the woods and set along the edges of the forest's 16 ponds. This heavily wooded park, minutes from Interstate Route 495, offers abundant beauty and many opportunities for recreation. Four lakes provide excellent fishing and swimming is available at the beach on Middle Pond. In the fall the contrast of scarlet cranberry bogs against the pines is breathtaking. Massasoit is a favorite for many campers.

Myles Standish State Forest Campground

Description: Sprawling across the southern sections of Plymouth and Carver, Myles Standish State Forest is the largest publicly owned recreation area in southeastern Massachusetts. Myles Standish campsites are tucked into the forest or set along the edges of four of the park's 16 ponds. Miles of trails lead visitors into a forest, which includes one of the largest contiguous pitch pine / scrub oak communities north of Long Island. The forest offers 35 miles of equestrian trails and 13 miles of hiking trails. For our bicycle riders there is 15 miles of paved bicycle trails.

Scusset Beach State Res. Campground

Description: NO dogs or other pet animals allowed on beachScusset Beach is located on Cape Cod Bay at the east end of the Cape Cod Canal. It is a popular swimming and year-round camping area. The campgrounds 98 sites with water and electric utilities are very popular with RV campers. For salt water anglers, the area offers a popular fish pier, a 3000 foot breakwater and 1 1/2 miles of frontage along the canal. A picnic area and bicycling along the canal are great for watching the variety of boats and ships passing through the canal. The Safari Field at Scusset Beach is reservable at the 1-877-422-6762.

Shawme Crowell is a great place to camp while exploring the Cape in any season.
