Saratoga Monument is open Wednesday through Sunday during its operating season.
Begun on October 17, 1877, and eventually dedicated in 1912, the Monument is an imposing 154.5 foot obelisk commemorating the Battles of Saratoga and General Burgoyne's surrender. The structure was built by a citizens' group, the Saratoga Monument Association, was transferred to New York State in 1895, and was transferred to the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1980. Four niches on the outside of the base contain life-sized statues commemorating three of the four American commanders instrumental in their side's victory: General Philip Schuyler, General Horatio Gates and Colonel Daniel Morgan. The fourth niche was to house a statue of General Benedict Arnold; it stands empty, in witness to his turning traitor later in the war.
