Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve - For KidsAt Kingsley Plantation, children enjoy exploring the historic buildings and the interpretive garden. At Fort Caroline National Memorial, children explore the interpretive rendering of Fort de la Caroline, and the adjacent one-mile self guided nature trail. Visitor center exhibits include a Native American dugout canoe and other artifacts from the Timucuan period. The "Mystery Box" gives youngsters the opportunity to identify shells, animal bones, and specimens of local plantlife. At the Theodore Roosevelt Area, people of all ages enjoy the ranger-guided Saltmarsh Program, which includes a demonstration of seine net fishing. One never knows what the ranger will catch! This program is dependent upon weather and tide conditions, so be sure to call ahead for the current schedule. Youngsters who successfully complete the activities for their age group are awarded a Timucuan Preserve Junior Ranger Badge. |
