Locks And Dam 3 - Monongahela River


Locks and Dam 3 is one of nine navigation structures which provide for year-round navigation on the Monongahela River between Pittsburgh, Pa. and Fairmont, West Virginia. It maintains a pool for 17.7 miles upstream to Locks and Dam 4 at Charleroi, PA. Locks and Dam 3 is located at river mile 23.8 at the city of Elizabeth, Pa. The lock chambers and operations buildings are situated along the right bank of the river adjacent to a main line of Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad. There are no public land-based facilities available at the project.


Road access to the project is from a local road going south out of Elizabeth.

Characterized by rugged beauty, this steep mountain range is filled with jagged peaks, deep valleys, cascading waterfalls and glaciers. North Cascades National Park Service Complex contains the heart of this mountainous region in three park units which are all managed as one and include North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas.

Badgers are animals of open country. Their oval burrows (ten inches across and four to six inches high) are familiar features of grasslands on sandy or loamy soils of the eastern plains or shrub country in mountain parks or western valleys.
