Vicksburg National Military Park - FacilitiesUSS Cairo Museum Open Cairo Museum: October to March: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. April to September: 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Phone 601-636-2199 Location Milepost 7.8 along park tour road. Closures Beginning in 2007, the U. S. S. Cairo Museum will be closed New Years Day, Thanksgiving Day and December 25. This schedule will remain in effect during 2008. Exhibits Civil War river class, ironclad gunboat (USS Cairo), Civil War period naval artifacts recovered from the Union vessel. Sailors" personal possessions, cookware and weaponry, are among items on exhibit. A six minute video explains how the CAIRO was sunk by a Confederate underwater mine, how it was located and actions taken during its salvage efforts. Available Facilities Visitor information, video presentation, artifact exhibit area, bookstore, pay telephone, rest room facilities (handicapped and baby changing area) and picnic tables. Visitor Center Open Open All Year 8:00am - 5:00pm Phone 601-636-0583 Location Visitors traveling east-west on Interstate 20; exit at Vicksburg ramp 4B, then follow Clay Street (US-80) west, 1/4 mile to park entrance. Visitors traveling north-south on US Highway 61; follow same directions as I-20 above. US-61 joins with I-20 in its route through the city of Vicksburg. Exhibits Inside: Confederate Lines, Hospital Room, Union Officers Tent, Civilian Meals during the siege, Cave Life, Military Artifacts; seasonal exhibits.
