Olympic Peninsula: The Grace and Grandeur
Mike Sedam

From the Publisher:
Cherished for its natural beauty, the Olympic Peninsula is one of the country’s most unique and diverse regions. And as the destination of approximately three million travelers each year, it is also one of Washington state’s most visited areas. Bounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound, the Peninsula is home to temperate rain forests, ice cold rivers, giant trees, brilliant waterfalls, alpine peaks, breathtaking glaciers, and an abundance of wildlife, including seven species of salmon and the Roosevelt elk.At the heart of the Peninsula is Olympic National Park. Established in 1938 to protect the most wild and beautiful part of the Peninsula, the park features three distinct ecosystems: the snow-capped Olympic Mountains, old-growth rain forests, and wilderness Pacific coast. Nearly 600 miles of hiking trails crisscross the park, and access by road is limited. Circling the Peninsula is Highway 101, which meanders through charming coastal fishing villages and the logging town of Port Angeles. "The Olympic Peninsula" is organized with a drive along this route in mind, starting from Port Townsend in the northeast corner of the peninsula and driving west toward Port Angeles and Crescent Lake before heading south toward Forks, the Pacific coast, and Queets. Along this route, you’ll encounter alternative routes that lead off the beaten path to seemingly untouched coastal areas or into the wild interior of Olympic National Park, where hiking trails abound. This spectacularly picturesque area is captured through the stunning, vivid photographs of Mike Sedam. This is the Olympic Peninsula in all of its splendor and magnificence, in all its grace and grandeur. Author Biography: Mike Sedam has specialized for nearly thirty years in travel photography around the globe. His work has been published widely in the travel industry and in numerous publications. He has published three other books, including "Seattle" (Voyageur Press), "Hawaii" (Graphic Arts Center Publishing), and "Papillion’s Hawaii" (Albion Publishing.)

Yosemite: The Grace and Grandeur
George Wuerthner

From the Publisher:
Glaciers, waterfalls, hundreds of miles of trails, wildlife, thousands of species of plants, giant sequoias. Yosemite National Park boasts a variety of landscapes that attracts more than three million visitors each year."Yosemite: The Grace and Grandeur" is a pictorial tribute to one of our nation’s oldest and beloved national parks. It not only presents outstanding color photographs of the familiar Yosemite vistas (Half Dome, El Capitan, Bridalveil Falls, Yosemite Falls), but also showcases the back-country areas (Tuolumne Meadows, Mount Dana and Dana Meadow, Tioga Pass). The substantial captions reflect author George Wuerthner’s strong background in geology and natural history, and make this a well-rounded look at what makes the park so special. Chapters are divided geographically, with an emphasis on the Yosemite Valley and Tuolumne Meadows areas—the most popular, highly visited areas of the park. "Yosemite: The Grace and Grandeur" will be a treasured keepsake for visitors to this famous park. Author Biography: George Wuerthner is a freelance writer, photographer, and ecologist. He has written 23 books, including "Yosemite: A Visitor’s Companion," and five other natural history guides to national parks, wilderness guides to California, and geographical overviews of specific regions. His photographs have appeared in such magazines as "National Geographic" and "Arizona Highways," as well as in calendars and books. His photographs have also been displayed at the Smithsonian, the National Museum of Natural History, and other museums.

From The Critics:
Library JournalFew sights on Earth are more spectacular than the view from the parking lot at Yosemite National Park. There, spread before you, is a valley of incomparable beauty, a scene that is difficult to comprehend fully the geology, the waterfalls, and the mountains all combine to produce a picture of sublime tranquility. Perhaps it is heresy to state that a photographer has surpassed or even equaled Ansel Adams’s stark black-and-white photographs of Yosemite, which have long been held up as the standard by which all other nature photos are judged, but in this beautiful pictorial guide, Wuerthner, himself a photographer and ecologist, certainly challenges the standard. Wuerthner goes beyond the typical tourist shots to present a panorama of Yosemite that only a gifted artist could capture. And while the photographs fully attest to the majesty as well as the fragility of this treasure, the text itself is also compelling. Wuerthner passionately argues against further development in or near the park, backing up his conservationist statements with an impressive knowledge of natural history. No matter how many books on Yosemite your library may already have, make room for this very special addition. Joseph L. Carlson, Allan Hancock Community Coll., CA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information. BooknewsPhotographer and writer Wuerthner captures the grandeur and beauty of Yosemite National Park in the heart of the Sierra Nevada. The text discusses European exploration of the Sierra Nevada, the Gold Rush and Indian wars, the creation of the park, the battle over Hetch Hetchy and other topics related to the park’s history, as well as wildlife management, tourism, and specific regions such as southern Yosemite, the valley, and the high country. The color photographs are accompanied by explanatory text. Oversize: 8.75x11.50. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

As a Minnesota state senator, he pioneered progressive legislation in the areas of civil rights, special education and welfare, mental health care, and metropolitan governance. His term as Minnesota’s governor in the early 1960s was marked by the founding of Southwest State University and the establishment of several state parks, which, along with his role in the creation of Voyageurs National Park, gained him a reputation as one of the region’s most important environmentalists. He built a small adhesives business, H. B. Fuller Company, into a world leader, and created a publishing empire from one weekly newspaper. The California Coast: The Most Spectacular Sights and Destinations
Karen Misuraca

From the Publisher:
The California coast is a visually stunning discovery of natural and manmade landmarks, wildlife and beaches, state and national parks, and national treasures, such as the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary and Point Reyes National Seashore. The perfect souvenir for visitors and a treasured keepsake for residents, The California Coast traces a spectacular 1,200-mile strip of the Pacific Rim. In more than one hundred color photographs and eight chapters, a rich natural and human history is portrayed, from the rugged, mountainous northern shore fringed with redwood forests to the sunny beaches of Santa Monica, the world-famous cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, the historic Spanish towns of Santa Barbara and Monterey, and the quaint fishing villages of Mendocino and Eureka. The soul of the coast is revealed in the stories of unique Californians, from an oysterman on Tomales Bay to a Chinatown legend, a surfer dude at Malibu, and the savior of an ancient tree named Luna.

From The Critics:
Library JournalA veteran travel writer of guides to San Francisco and Northern California, with at least four titles in multiple editions, Misuraca has expanded her territory by heading south from the Redwoods down the coast to San Diego. In this colorful portrait of the West Coast, she describes the environment, towns and cities, and attractions that make this 1200-mile coastline an exciting place to explore. The ten essays, providing both current and historical perspectives, are accompanied by over 120 color photographs that are sure to stimulate any armchair traveler’s imagination. This is not a traditional travel guide, as it does not provide detailed information on attractions; nor does it include listings of restaurants and places to stay as does, for instance, Don Neuwirth’s The California Coast: A Traveler’s Companion (LJ 4-15-98). It does, however, stand alone as an excellent introduction to the California coastline for students and visitors alike. Recommended for all libraries in California as well as for libraries that wish to supplement their basic travel collections on the Golden State.-John McCormick, New Hampshire State Lib., Concord Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

The Wolves of Yellowstone
Michael K. Phillips

From the Publisher:
In 1995, history was made as 14 gray wolves were transported from the Canadian wilderness and released in Yellowstone National Park. Their release marked the beginning of a landmark project to restore wolves to an area from where they had been absent for almost 100 years. The Wolves of Yellowstone provides the inside story of the trials and tribulations encountered during the first year and a half of restoring wolves to Yellowstone. Written by the project leaders of the restoration effort, it is the only book to contain the biologists’ personal accounts, along with never-before-seen photographs, field notes, historical documents, and reminiscences from key figures such as Bruce Babbit and Dave Mech. The Wolves of Yellowstone allows readers to become completely familiar with this historic undertaking. Mike Phillips and Doug Smith detail the capture, translocation, acclimation, release, and tracking after release of the Yellowstone wolves. Both the 1995 and 1996 wolf releases are discussed. Given the continuing media coverage of this project and the large and loyal following of wolf fans worldwide, The Wolves of Yellowstone promises to be a much-sought-after reference.

From The Critics:
Choice In 11 thoughtfully written and well-illustrated chapters, the authors lead the reader through a brief history of the wolf before and after its extirpation from the Yellowstone area. The writing is uniformly excellent, extremely well edited, and will inspire as well as educate all who read this fascinating account. Publishers WeeklyTo wildlife biologists of the National Park Service, 1995 was the "Year of the Wolf," at least in Yellowstone Park. The release of 14 gray wolves, translocated from the Canadian wilderness, marked the culmination of a quarter century of effort to devise a strategy for restoration. Project leaders Phillips and Smith give an engrossing, detailed account of the events-capture, translocation, acclimation, release-and the subsequent fate of the animals in their new home. Their narrative is interrupted at various points by 16 brief essays by others involved in the release, including Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt. Phillips relates the poignant story of wolf #10, shot from the highway, his mate, #9, and their eight pups. Another wolf, #3, had to be destroyed because of predation. Wolf restoration is one of the most important conservation initiatives in our history, according to the authors; they plead for continued congressional and public support. Stunning photographs make their own eloquent plea for the wolves. (Dec.) FYI: Proceeds from the sale of this book will be contributed to support wolf restoration in Yellowstone. Library JournalBy the mid-1930s silence had replaced the howl of the wolf in the Yellowstone ecosystem-the result of overly zealous government predator control programs. In this eloquent and concisely written book, Phillips and Smith, project leaders for Yellowstone wolf recovery, provide an inside account of the complete restoration project, including public relations, capture, relocation, acclimation, both the 1995 and 1996 releases, and tracking. Fifteen additional persons involved with the project, including former Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, contribute short, often moving essays describing their thoughts and feelings about the return of the wolf to the park. Most of the over 70 color photos are of the wolves themselves. These mesmerizing pictures make the book. Recommended for any public or academic library with a strong environmental collection; also highly recommended for libraries in the Rocky Mountain region.-Lynn C. Lions
Brian Bertram

From the Publisher:
Humans have long regarded the "King of the Beasts" with awe. The dominant predator in Africa, the lion stalks relatively large prey animals in fairly open country and feedS on a variety of prey species. Still, their numbers are declining almost everywhere. With its authoritative information based on world-recognized research, up-to-date information, and spectacular color photography and range maps, Lions helps readers of all ages discover fascinating facts about this phenomenal animal. This book is a wonderful general introduction to the remarkably adaptable lion, providing information on its characteristics, its pride (the long-lasting core of lion society), its uniquely social nature, studies in the wild, and the great conservation efforts being made on behalf of the Asiatic subspecies of lion. For ages 10+. About the Author: Brian Bertram is a freelance zoological advisor, acting principally for the Bristol Zoo Gardens, England, as Special Projects Coordinator, where he is responsible for a variety of new development projects. He was Curator of Mammals at the Zoological Society of London, where he was responsible for all the big cats-along with 150 other species of mammals-as well as the Aquarium and Invertebrates. He spent four years studying lions and leopards in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

From The Critics:
Children’s Literature - Lois Rubin GrossForget "hakuna matata," forget shaman baboons and vaudevillian meerkats. In fact, forget any cartoon "king of beasts" that you ever saw because Dr. Brian Bertram has written a true-to-life study of the African lion as serious as any written with a young audience in mind. Bertram, a Ph.D. who spent four years studying lions in the Serengeti National Park, includes every detail of his subject’s lifestyle and habitat. He covers the history and mythology of the great cats, their social interactions in prides, their gender-specific roles in hunting and family responsibility, their mating habits, and their geographic diversity. He even explains how the lion got his roar! He also shows how lions are impacted by man’s encroachment, and what the lions’ dwindling numbers mean in terms of environmental balance. The vocabulary used in this book is very challenging, almost scholarly, like a clearly written encyclopedia article. Dr. Bertram does not condescend to young readers. Formatted like a picture book to accommodate stunning and graphic photos of lions in the wild, its size and shape may turn off sophisticated readers-the very ones who will most benefit from this exhaustive study of the species, Panthera leo. Index, charts, and recommended readings are appended. BooknewsAccompanied by a number of color photographs, the text explores the behavior and biology of lions and discusses how interaction with human populations has affected them. Fawn Island
Douglas Wood

From the Publisher:
Fawn Island is a place where crows serve as alarm clocks, white-throated sparrows leave the tracks of their songs upon the evening hush, and chickadees help a woodsman learn to whistle. The island is also a jumping-off place for journeys large and small, earthly and spiritual-to nearby Mallard Island, Gull Island, or Bald Rock, by sea kayak into the wild recesses of sprawling Voyageurs National Park, or on a midnight paddle in which the paddler can reach the silent wilderness of the stars themselves. In his latest book, best-selling author Douglas Wood guides the reader on a deep journey into the heart of the North Woods. For Wood, Fawn Island is not merely a charming wilderness hideaway, it is the entry to realms of thought and meaning as well. From its pine-clad shores he probes for insights into the nature of neighborliness and independence, of community and solitude. Out of an ancient Ojibwe legend comes an exploration of personal loss and life after death. Wood questions the notion of being a "force of nature" and the concept of the passage of time in the context of seemingly eternal trees, lakes, rock ledges, and stars. From beneath the ascending trunks of pines comes an inquiry into the principles of optimism, and finally, a personal response to the eternal question: Is the universe a friendly place? Embedded in the text like roots of the island’s pines is Wood’s gentle, self-effacing humor and the author’s own original pen-and-ink drawings that superbly evoke the poetry and mystery of this "small bit of rock and tree," this "lucky place" in the wilderness. About the Author:Douglas Wood is the best-selling author of several books for readers of all ages, including Old Turtle (1992) and Paddle Whispers (1992), Grandad’s Prayers of the Earth (1999) and the new What Dads Can’t Do (2000). One of the North Country’s most experienced wilderness guides, he has led dozens of canoe trips focused on ecology, natural history, and personal growth. He lives near Sartell, Minnesota.

From The Critics:

Voyageurs National Park: The Battle to Create Minnesota’s National Park
Fred T. Witzig

From the Publisher:
"When President Nixon signed the legislation authorizing the establishment of Voyageurs National Park on January 8, 1971, almost eighty years had passed since Minnesota’s government initially petitioned to create a national park in the northern portion of the state." Voyageurs National Park chronicles the complex legal and political campaign to found Minnesota’s only national park. Concentrating on the period from 1962 to 1975, Witzig identifies and explains the central issues surrounding the campaign, including land acquisition policy, local concerns and opposition to the park, interagency conflict over U.S. forest lands, antifederal attitudes in northeastern Minnesota, and the overstated case for the economic benefits a national park would bring. Witzig covers the dispute over the inclusion of Crane Lake in the park and focuses on the many individuals and groups who were instrumental in the establishment of Voyageurs National Park, such as Governor Elmer L. Andersen, John A. Blatnik, Sigurd F. Olson, and Rita Shemesh.

Voyageur Country: The Story of Minnesota’s National Park
Robert Treuer

From the Publisher:
Over 250,000 people visit Minnesota’s only national park each year. This popularity raises crucial questions: Can timber wolves thrive amid snowmobiles and jet skis? Can the thin layer of fragile soil atop the Precambrian shield, the oldest exposed rock on earth, survive the feet of campers? Voyageur Country explores these quandaries, describes the environmental significance of the park, and presents the only complete history of this important region. The first paperback edition of this classic work includes an updated preface and chronology. The birth of the modern incarnation of Voyageurs as a national park is detailed, with accounts of the contributions of Sigurd Olson and other conservationists. Voyageur Country is an essential launching point for considering the policy that guides our relationship with the land.

Condors and Vultures (Worldlife Library Series)
David Houston

From the Publisher:
Condors and vultures are supremely efficient scavengers; their skill and efficiency in flight helps them survive by finding dead animals rather than killing for themselves. Although they are among the most abundant of all birds of prey, their role in wildlife communities is often misunderstood. Houston explains how these birds fit into natural wildlife communities, and the special adaptations that are required to be an efficient scavenger. "Condors and Vultures" discusses the diversity of these fascinating creatures and their distribution, and explains why in many parts of the world they are endangered by humans’ activities and need active conservation. He has since studied them in other areas of Africa, India, and South America.

From The Critics:
KLIATTThese are sturdy books, with exceptionally fine nature photographs and detailed text—good selections for any collection of books about nature. The photographs of tornadoes are especially stunning. The authors are naturalists and their text is authoritative, but they write at a level 12-year-olds can absorb as well as adults. Information about the subjects themselves are of primary concern, but the authors each discuss the relationship of human beings to their topics as well. For example, the book on tornadoes not only describes how they are formed and where they occur, but also details the destruction they cause in communities, especially in "tornado alley" in the U.S., and the importance of accurate forecasting. Its solitude offers a relatively undisturbed habitat, and its unusually varied ecosystem—the open water of large lakes, wetlands, and upland forests—provides a unique home for its bird population. Indeed, Voyageurs encompasses some of the greatest diversity of bird life in North America with over one hundred species known to breed within the park and even more nonbreeding visitors. This book describes one hundred of Voyageurs’ most commonly seen birds—from the familiar Common Loon to more unusual species such as the Black-Backed Three-Toed Woodpecker and the Mourning Warbler. Each entry provides a full-color photograph, a detailed description, behavioral information, and tips for where to go in the park to see these birds. Here we learn that more than half of the warblers of eastern North America can be found in the Voyageurs environs. And we are provided with explanations for surprising facts such as the paucity of sandpipers in the park (it has few of the sandy beaches and mudflats they require) and how beavers influence the bird species that reside there. Voyageurs is one of the best birding destinations in the national park system. Until now there was no adequate resource for those wishing to enjoy its singular combination of species and habitats. This richly illustrated volume fills that void. Not only informational, it will also be a cherished memento for visitors to the Minnesota-Ontario border country and an inspiration for those planning such a trip. The Voyageurs Region National Park Association was formed in 1965 to work for the creation of Voyageurs National Park. Since the park’s authorization by Congress in 1971, the organization has worked to preserve the natural, recreational, and historic resources of Voyageurs National Park and to promote public enjoyment of the park.

Making Sense of Intractable Environmental Conflicts: Concepts and Cases
Roy J. Lewicki (Editor)

From the Publisher:
Despite a vast amount of effort and expertise devoted to them, many environmental conflicts have remained mired in controversy for decades, stubbornly defying resolution. Making Sense of Intractable Environmental Conflicts examines the question of why environmental problems that can be resolved in one locale remain contentious in another. The book examines eight cases of such intractable disputes, over natural resource use, toxic pollutants, water quality, and growth. Specific conflicts covered include the Quincy Library Group in California, Edwards Aquifer in Texas, Alton Park-Piney Woods in Tennessee, and three examples of growth-related conflicts in Colorado. Using an approach that focuses on the "frames" by which parties interpret and understand the conflict and critical conflict dynamics, the contributors offer powerful insights into these disputes and new strategies for resolving intractable conflicts.
