War In The Pacific National Historical Park - Activities**Note: The park"s trails and beaches sustained severe erosion, loss and other damage due to Super Typhoon Pongsona on 12/8/2002. Apaca Point, Ga"an Point, Piti Guns, and Asan Bay Overlook re-opened on 1/15/03. The Asan Bay Overlook is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Asan Beach Unit is limited to walk-in visits. The beachside parking facility was destroyed by Super-typhoon Pongsona and will remain closed. Public restrooms are limited to portable facilities. A fringing coral reef surrounds much of Guam, and snorkeling, swimming, and kayaking are highlights of a trip to War in the Pacific NHP. Average water temperature is 78, and visibility is very clear. A wide variety of plants, coral, and marine life can be seen while swimming and snorkeling. Use caution when swimming, diving, or snorkeling. Be aware of your surroundings and use the buddy system. Several species of poisonous marine life can be found in Guam"s waters. The strong, unpredictable currents can also be hazardous. Hiking is a recommended activity. Pillboxes, gun emplacements, and military relics are easily accessible. Necessary precautions should be taken when hiking, due to the extreme heat and high humidity on Guam. Always have plenty of water with you and hike with a buddy at all times. |
