Washita Battlefield National Historic Site - ForestsSurprisingly for a prairie site, Washita does have a wooded component as part of its ecosystem. The Washita River supports a strip of riparian vegetation that varies in width. Two other strips of woody vegetation occur along the boundaries where the north and south floodplains meet the upland prairie. To what extent these woods exist due to human manipulation of the habitat is open to question. In any event, though, the presence of these forest pockets adds welcome biodiversity to the park"s natural makeup. |
