Weir Farm National Historic Site - Winged Euonymus

Winged Euonymus (Euonymus alatus) is also known as burning bush due to its scarlet to purplish red leaves in the fall. Euonymus is a deciduous shrub that can reach 4.6 to 6 meters in height. It has grayish brown bark and the stems have corky wings running along both sides.

Winged Euonymus is native to northeast Asia and was introduced as an ornamental shrub. It produces a large amount of seeds which are a favorite of birds and germinate very easily. It is commonly found along road edges and disturbed habitat, but can also be found in mature forests.
