Headquarters District Camping Areas Details
Along the Richardson and Edgerton Highways, there are a wealth of private
campgrounds and lodging facilities.
McCarthy District Camping Areas Details Along the McCarthy Road there are several privately owned campgrounds. The Copper River campground is located at the beginning of the road near Chitina and provides picnic tables, grills, vault toilets, and river access. Near the end of the McCarthy Road is the Glacier View Campground with campsites and bike rentals. The privately owned "Base Camp Root Glacier" is located at the very end of the road and provides parking and camping. The National Park Service maintains the primitive Jumbo Creek Camping Area for backpackers. Located one mile along the Root Glacier Trail, this primitive site provides tent sites with great views and an outhouse.
Nabesna District camping areas Open Open All Year
Phone 907 822 5238 Details Camping is available at a number of roadside pullouts along Nabesna Road, some with picnic tables with vaulted toilets available at four locations. All of these sites are available on a first come, first served basis. There are no formal NPS campgrounds in Wrangell St. Elias at this time. Virtually unlimited backcountry camping is available.
Backcountry Cabins
There are 13 public-use cabins located within Wrangell-St. Elias. These are
remote locations and require hikers/campers to make appropriate plans. Many
of these cabins are accessible only by aircraft.
