Wupatki National Monument - Activities

Allow 2 hours to see five prehistoric pueblos; or, at least 30 minutes to visit the largest - Wupatki Pueblo - located behind the Visitor Center. Wupatki Pueblo Trail, located at the Visitor Center, is a self-guided tour of the largest pueblo in the park.

Don"t miss the blowhole, a fascinating geologic feature. The trail is less than .5 mile (.8km) round trip. Lomaki Pueblo Trail is an easy .5 mile (.8km) walk to several pueblos. Wukoki, Citadel, and Nalakihu Pueblos are reached by short .2 mile (.4 km) trails. Doney Mountain Trail ascends .5 mile (.8 km) from the picnic area to the top of the cinder cone for spectacular views of the surrounding area.

 Pets must be kept on a leash at all times. They are not allowed in buildings or on park trails. Hiking is restricted to established trails only. The backcountry of Wupatki is closed to hiking to protect fragile archeological sites. BACKPACKING OPPORTUNITY - For a special ranger-guided backpacking experience, consider the Crack-in-the-Rock hike, offered on weekends in April and October. This trip explores fantastic rock art and pueblo architecture in an area not normally open to the public. This a strenuous 16-mile cross country overnight trip, carrying a 30-40 pound pack. Each hike is limited to 13 people; minimum age is 10. Cost is $50.00 per person, and participants are selected through a lottery system.
