SummerIn summer, anglers can try their luck at countless lakes and streams. Mammoth Mountain Ski Area becomes a mecca for mountain biking. Over1,200 miles of hiking and equestrian trails provide access to vast areas of wilderness. OHV enthusiasts have access to over 2,200 miles of routes. There are 107 campgrounds and picnic areas with thousands of individual sites.CampgroundsWinterThe fun doesn’t stop when winter arrives. Some parts of the Inyo average up to 400 inches of snow annually! The forest is home to one of the largest ski resorts in the country. For Nordic skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers, there are over 100 miles of groomed trails. Maine ocean islands provide the only nesting sites for Atlantic puffins in the United States. Eastern Egg Rock in the midcoast region, Seal Island and Matinicus Rock at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, and Machias Seal Island and Petit Manan Island off the downeast coast provide habitat for more than 4,000 puffins each summer.
