Amistad National Recreation Area Ferns
If you are familliar with the environments ferns enjoy, you might be supprised to see the diveristy of ferns growing in the arid hills and cliffs around Amistad. You even find some growing among the pads of large prickly pears. However, the majority of ferns are found in their more traditional niche, growing in moist soils watered by springs and seeps along canyon walls. Maine ocean islands provide the only nesting sites for Atlantic puffins in the United States. Eastern Egg Rock in the midcoast region, Seal Island and Matinicus Rock at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, and Machias Seal Island and Petit Manan Island off the downeast coast provide habitat for more than 4,000 puffins each summer.
