Few people go to remote Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve. Its acres are among the least visited in the National Park System. Notoriously bad weather combines with costly and unpredictable access to discourage most would be visitors. Although the unit is hard to get to it offers spectacular scenic vistas and examples of geologic and hydrologic activity.
Maine ocean islands provide the only nesting sites for Atlantic puffins in the United States. Eastern Egg Rock in the midcoast region, Seal Island and Matinicus Rock at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, and Machias Seal Island and Petit Manan Island off the downeast coast provide habitat for more than 4,000 puffins each summer.
