Big Cypress National Preserve contains hundreds of sites where, in the past, fill was brought in, or excavated from the site, to create elevated areas for homes, commercial enterprises, roads, campgrounds and runways. Since its creation, Big Cypress National Preserve has acquired many of these disturbed sites. Although Big Cypress allows for continued use by landowners, the Preserve is still in the process of buying additional land, including disturbed areas.
