Water is the key to all of the natural features found within the Buffalo National River. From its beginning as a drop of rain until the time the water flows from the mouth of the Buffalo River, water hydrates, cuts, creates, moves, and maintains the natural wonders that makes the Buffalo National River one of the nation's greatest natural resources.
Maine ocean islands provide the only nesting sites for Atlantic puffins in the United States. Eastern Egg Rock in the midcoast region, Seal Island and Matinicus Rock at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, and Machias Seal Island and Petit Manan Island off the downeast coast provide habitat for more than 4,000 puffins each summer.
